Games for Health Europe (GFHEU)

The roots for Games for Health Europe (GFHEU) are in the USA, where Ben Sawyer started Games for Health USA, a major serious game conference. Impressed as they were about Re-Mission (2008), the first serious game with clinical evidence that cured children with cancer , Jurriaan and Sandra van Rijswijk founded GFHEU in 2010 as a non-profit organization. Their intentions were to stimulate the development of serious games in Europe. In 2011 the first GFHEU conference was organized in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Since then it has evolved to an annual event, with a network of over 30.000 supporters all over the world.

Every year hundreds of experts in serious game design, entrepreneurs, scientists, medical professionals, researchers, opinion leaders and government representatives meet in order to share their (clinical) experiences, achievements, business cases, innovative ideas, research and development results. Meanwhile more than 600 scientific lectures and 400 workshops over the past conferences contribute to the global expertise on serious games. Today Games for Health Europe is acknowledged as an international expertise center in this field. Its expertise covers amongst others cognitive training, elderly and children care, behavioral change and prevention, public health, medical training and peoples well-being. The overall objective is to achieve a paradigm shift in healthcare by the application of serious games. A healthcare system where health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Backbone to this paradigm shift is the philosophy that “to play” is in the humans DNA. “No one learned to ride a bike from a book, but in a playful manor”. By the application of so called Playful Intelligence a change in behavior can be achieved easier, faster and more sustainable. And that is where GFHEU contributes to the Erasme+ Sugapas project.
